I have CutePDF writer, but I need to protect a document with a password. How can I do this?

The CutePDF Writer doesn't have the possibility to add passwords to created PDF files. You will need the Professional version for that. You can try it for free using the link posted below, but I don't think that all the features will be available for this procedure.
I loaded CutePDF Writer on my new laptop as I am a great fan of this software. Once the program loaded I noticed a screen message saying that Ghost (something) might be Ghost writer was also loaded. Strange name for a piece of software - I'd just like to know if its something you are aware of and have that its part of the package?

What you have seen is actually the GhostScript, a component that is used to transform the file to PDF. It's available as an open-source licence and many applications use it when it's about XPS, PS and PDF file conversion and encapsulation.
Yes, CutePDF Writer requires a one-time connection to the Internet in order to download the GPL PostScript package that's needed to export the PDF files. Without it, the Writer package is useless. But you can also install the package manually from the Download page provided by the developers. The advantage of using CutePDF Writer is that the whole process is automatic. The installer has an embedded downloader that will get the necessary package for your computer and install it without visiting other pages.
Free version of CutePDF writer doesn't have the option to create password protected files. However, if you pay for CutePDF Professional you'll get much more benefits besides the ability to protect your files. The CutePDF Writer doesn't have a command line version. When installed, it will only copy the driver and make it available along GhostScript installation. I have searched everywhere and couldn't find anything related to command line support for CutePDF Writer. The FAQ and Support pages don't specify anything related to this request which means the software lacks these functions or are not available in the free version.

You can't add a password to the document you want to generate. The Writer only creates PDF files with all the restrictions removed. You will need a fully capable PDF editor in order to assign a password and modify restrictions.
If you choose to use the same application from this developer, then you should know that the Professional version allows you to password-protect your documents. This feature is mentioned on the font page of the application: http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/pro.asp

If the CutePDF Writer crashes at launch then you need to reset the Print Spooler service. Go to Start > Run > services.msc and locate the Print Spooler in the list. Right click it and choose Restart, then create a new PDF. If you still experience the bug, then I recommend reinstalling the latest version from its official website.

Another solution is to encrypt the file and add password by creating a RAR or ZIP archive. It's more powerful and very hard to crack.
